Investments in IT Are Going to Increase
It is not all doom and gloom - Time to Invest In IT Infrastructure

Getting ready for the turn around that will happen nine to twelve months from now is a top priority on the agenda for many Chief Technology Officers and Chief Information Officers.  Those CTO's and CIO's who focus on infrastructure investments versus raw cuts in IT expenditures will be geared towards success.  The others will be playing catch-up.

Factors that are driving our forecast that things will be better are:

  • Falling Energy Costs - With the drop in energy a major downward pull on the economy has been eliminated.  Everything will continue to be priced reasonably, and imports will increase again.  That will boost the economy in China and help drive the world wide recovery.
  • Falling Interest Rates - Will push the improvement in the performance of banks and investment firms, which will result in some modest growth. The lower interest rates will enable companies in many sectors of the economy to invest in some growth as well.
  • The Dollar's Value is increasing - The dollar has gained value during the economic crisis because it's seen as a safe haven and there should be an increase in the DOW and NASDQ.
  • Government's economic stimulus plan - It looks like the package will  include $700 billion to $800 billion in new investments, many of which will involve technology. Targeted vertical markets will include education, health care and energy, the latter with an array of new initiatives that will rely on IT.

On the down side - InvestorPlace Media LLC's ChangeWave market research subsidiary recently released data from a November survey of nearly 2,000 respondents on their IT spending plans. According to ChangeWave, 45% of the respondents said that their companies will reduce IT spending or not make any tech purchases at all during next year's first quarter.

Cutting costs may be what CIOs and CTO want to do but now is the time to invest in IT Infrastructure and get ready for the recovery.
