Google Desktop going the way of Netscape -- Windows 7 Takes Off

The August 2010 Browser and Operating System Market Share White Paper has just been released

Janco has just released its Browser and Operating System Market Share White Paper. The study shows that in the last 12 months Microsoft’s browser market share has continued to erode – Microsoft lost over 4% in the last 12 months; Firefox’s market share is unchanged for the last 12 months; and Google Desktop and Chrome now have just under 6%. On the operating systems side, Windows 7 is being accepted at a pace is parallel to the way Window XP was in the 90’s. The CEO of Janco Associates, Victor Janulaitis said, “The last six months have been a mixed bag for Microsoft. Their browser market share has fallen to level that they back in 1998 with no end in sight. At the same time Windows 7 now has 17% of the OS market in less than 13 months since its availability.

The study shows that:

Firefox challenged Microsoft as no other competitor has done in quite some time but Microsoft seems to have addressed this
The SmartPhone market has taken off and users no longer have to depend on a PC to access the Internet
Users are staying current with the latest versions of IE, and Firefox via the automatic update feature.
Google’s Chrome is disappointing and has captured only a little over 5% of the browser market since its introduction.
Internet Explorer’s market share continues to fall.
Attacks on browsers are moving many users to the automatic update feature to get the latest versions of the browsers.
The door was open for Google with both Desktop and Chrome – it is not clear that the current offering by Microsoft’s competitors can do more damage to Microsoft browser market share. However Microsoft must address the SmartPhone market to maintain its leadership position.

The top five browser market share rankings are: 1 - Microsoft’s IE – 66.07%; 2 - Firefox – 18.60%; 3 – Google (Desktop & Chrome) – 6.24%; 4 – Konqueror (Linux) – 4.65%; 5 – Safari– 1.36%. The CEO of Janco Associates, Inc and the IT Productivity Center, M. Victor Janulaitis said: “The positive glow on Google’s Chrome has been dulled with the identification of some defects in the way it handles XML pages. But the real story is the continued erosion of Microsoft’s” market and the decay of Google’s Desktop market share.

Trends in Browser Market Share 12 Months - August 2010 – August 2009

Google Desktop seems to be a product that is not going to survive as a viable product. It continues to lose market share while Google Chrome is slowly taking hold.

Microsoft Market Share Decline

At one time Internet Explorer had over 90% of the total browser maket. Those days are long past as IE's market share continues to erode a percentatge point at time.

Windows 7 is success

A major finding in the report is that Microsoft’s new Operating System, Windows 7 has 17.39% of the OS market less than 13 months after its availability. That is a major factor in Microsoft’s improved record earnings. Janulaitis said, “The last time that an OS was accepted as quickly the market was XP. Vista’s market share has peaked and is in the process of being decommissioned in most enterprises.”
